A Stormwater Management and Paddock Stabilization Project

As many of you will have noticed, our paddocks have become eroded and muddy when it rains.

We are about to embark on an integrated stormwater management and paddock stabilization project to fix this problem on the entire property.

We will be resurfacing the paddocks to create dry lots like the one in the center picture above that will drain optimally and be easier to maintain. Our horses can be outside more, they’ll lose fewer shoes, and their hooves will stay healthier. (*Thanks to Monastery Stables for this photo.)

This project will also be a major step toward better protecting our beloved Wissahickon Creek from harmful excess nutrients and sediment in the runoff. Stormwater best management practices, such as collection boxes, underground pipes, improved gutter systems, vegetated buffers, and a rain garden, will divert stormwater from the paddocks and allow for appropriate drainage and absorption before the water reaches the Creek.

We are receiving generous funding and support from the Schuylkill River Restoration Fund and the Natural Resources Conservation Service, but we can’t do it without community support.
